Todays smartphones pride themselves with the quality of their cameras. The first iPhone camera had a measly 2 megapixels, while todays smartphone cameras push 100 megapixels.
The thing is – good photography is all about lighting. And while most smartphones take good photos and videos with daylight – many tend to suck when it comes to low light situations. So what do you do if you want to take a well lit selfie? Or film yourself doing the latest TikTok trend? Get yourself a Smartphone Ring Light!
Before you buy
Before you rush off and buy the first selfie ring light that you see, you need to understand that a smartphone ring light that clips on to your phone is no replacement for a free standing ring light. The light output as well as the quality of the light is far superior than something that clips on your phone. BUT that doesn’t mean a selfie ring light will do a poor job. You just need to be sure what you want to be using it for.
Smartphone ring lights exceed at portability and ease of use. It just snaps onto the back of your camera, and with the flick of a switch you can instantly fire up the lights. No fuss and no hassle setting up a tripod and cables.
When buying a Selfie Ring Light for your smartphone, its always wort looking out for a few things:
1) Does the smartphone ring light come with rechargeable batteries? (Don’t have to worry about buying batteries)
2) Does the selfie ring light come with a remote? (A nice convenience extra, especially when filming)
3) Can you change the light settings of the smartphone ring light? (It should have at least 3 settings)
4) How many LEDs does the selfie ring light have? (The more the better)

A closer look at our Selfie Ring Light recommendations
Whellen Selfie Ring Light
Clip-on ring lights have become ever more popular, and to be honest, they are all mostly the same. Don’t expect too much compared to the professional ring lights, but in all fairness it gets the job done. The Whellen Selfie Ring Light has 3 adjustable lighting options (2 more than many larger ring lights) – and they do create acceptable lighting options. For $17, it’s a great purchase.
GLOUE Selfie Light Ring Led
The GLOUE Selfie Light Ring is the cheapest smartphone ring light on our list coming at just under $14($11.99 if you apply their coupon). Like the other entries, it’s a fairly compact ring light and as a 3 Level adjustable brightness setting. It’s got an internal battery so you don’t need to go around running looking for a spare – but beware -the battery life reportedly short (as is the micro USB charging cable).
QIAYA Selfie Light Ring
If you think that the QIAYA Selfie Light Ring might seem remarkably similar to the GLOUE Selfie Ring Light – well you’re right. What differentiates the QIAYA smartphone selfie light from its competitors is its strong light performance (during day light as well) and its versatility when it comes to being used on Laptops and tablets.
LITTIL Selfie Mini
The LITTIL Selfie Mini is our favorite entry in this list mainly because they choose to use a form factor other than the standard ring. It’s super small and easily clips on to every phone. Its size is also its main draw back as its battery life is fraction of what the other smartphone ring lights offer. While it might not have much stamina, it quite possibly offers the highest brightness of all selfie lights in this list.
