Heres one for the Pokemon crowd: After Canon Japan has launched a teaser website for a Pokemon themed version of its popular Canon Ivy Rec cameras – we finally get a look (and a price) at the Pikachu Camera.
Known locally as the Canon iNSPiC Rec, the Canon Ivy Rec was launched as a project on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo back in July 2019 and hit US markets mid October of the same year. It was billed as an action cam of sorts, with its main appeal being that it was a small portable, clippable, shock and waterproof camera.
Retailing at $129.99 at the time, it received mediocre reviews due to its below average frame rate and poor photo performance. True Action cameras retailed at a similar price point and offered higher resolution videos and photos. Nevertheless it was popular enough, and it seems like a year after its first release, the Pokemon Company and Canon see an opportunity for another special edition release.
Now, Canon has launched a Pikachu themed version of the Ivy Rec just in time for the holiday season. The Pokemon version of the Ivy Rec comes with a “jacket” (aka faceplate) with Pikachus face on it, as well as two other random jackets (theres 8 in total) which are decorated with other Pikachu themed designes. If you catch an early adopter pack, you’ll bag yourself an exclusive neck strap, key chain and an additional jacket.
Canon is set to release the Pikachu Ivy Rec by the end of October, but don’t expect a US or European release – as always with these things – this ones a Japan only release.
The INSPIC Rec meets Pokemon (as its locally known) will retail for ¥18,480 (thats about $155). If you’re lucky you might be able to catch one on a Japanese reseller site – or even ebay.
If you want to get your hands on one of the non-pokemon branded Ivy Recs, they currently retail on Amazon for $79 – not bad a bad price for an everyday clip on camera.
