The Zeiss ZX1 has an official preorder date – the 29th of October 2020

All the way back in September 2018, Zeiss announced the the Zeiss ZX1 at the Photokina in Cologne Germany. Since then things have been very very quiet and many thought that the Zeiss ZX1 might have been too ambitious and – at $6000 – too pricey for the market.

B&H have apparently sent out an email to customers, notifying them that the Zeiss ZX1 is available for pre-order (for $6000) and will be “coming soon”. This might have been a mistake as B&H have removed the preoder price from the page since then.

Now Zeiss have announced an official worldwide preorder date for their ZX1 – the 29th of October, 2020.

Zeiss ZX1 Specs

Zeiss stated at the time that they designed the camera to enable photographers to shoot, edit and share images on the go. For this purpose the camera was meant to run on a custom Android version, and Zeiss even partnered up with Adobe to ensure that Lightroom CC would run directly on the camera.

The Zeiss ZX1 features a 37.4MP sensor, with a fixed fixed 35mm Distagon F2 lens and should be capable of shooting 4k UHD at 30fps. It doesn’t have a SD Card slot, but comes with a 512GB internal SSD.

Its worth wondering if this camera will find any significant customer base when it hits the market. A quick glance at its specs reveals its age – especially since we already have Cameras on the market with up to 61MP sensors.

While the Zeiss ZX1 does give quite a bit of real estate to the 4.3 inch touchscreen display on the back, its hard to believe that this is worth the $6k price tag. And the same goes for the pre-installed Lightroom CC. Theres no word on what Android Version the ZX1 comes with, but one would hope it’s not the one from two (or more) years ago.

Zeiss ZX1 Price and Release Date

The Zeiss ZX1 was briefly available for pre-order on B&H, but the preorder price of $6000 had been removed since then. Now Zeiss have announced an official worldwide preorder date for the ZX1 on the 29th of October, 2020 at 19:00 Tokyo time. The question still remains if anyone will really still be interested 2 years after the initial announcement.
